Bank Sumsel Babel was established on November 6, 1957 based on the Decree of the Commander in Chief of the Regional Warfare of Sriwijaya Level I South Sumatra, Deed of Notary Tan Thong Ke, and permission from the business from the Minister of Finance at that time.
In 1962, since the enactment of Law Number 13 of 1962 concerning Regional Development Banks, the Sumsel Babel Bank officially became the property of the Regional Government of South Sumatra Province with the status of a Regional company.

After experiencing several changes, most recently since the enactment of Law Number 7 of 1992 concerning banking and in accordance with Regional Regulation No. 6 of 2000 dated May 19, 2000, Bank Sumsel changed the form of legal entity from a Regional Company to a Limited Liability Company with the Deed of Establishment No. 20 dated 25 November 2000 and the approval of the Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia No.3/2/KEP.DpG/2001 dated 24 September 2001.

The change in legal entity took effect on October 1, 2001, with various fundamental and comprehensive changes that made Bank Sumsel more professional and able to compete in the era of regional autonomy.

Previously, the Government of the South Sumatra Province covered the South Sumatra region and the Bangka Belitung Islands Region, and as a result of regional expansion the Bangka Belitung Islands Province was ratified on November 22, 2000, so officially the Bangka Belitung Islands were a Province of Expansion from the South Sumatra Region and became the Government of the Islands Province Bangka Belitung.

Because Bank Sumsel is owned by two Provincial Governments, the name change was initiated from Bank Sumsel to Bank SUMSEL BABEL.

Based on the Statement of Shareholders' Resolutions Outside the Meeting of PT. South Sumatra Regional Development Bank Number 02 dated 03 November 2009 and Ratification of the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia Number: AHU-56914.AH.01.02.
